WLB Launches New Research Into Developing a Hydrogen Market In West London

West London Business today launches a new policy paper looking at the development of hydrogen as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

The transformation of the UK’s economy from carbon intensive energy sources to Net Zero has shifted attention to hydrogen as an alternative to coal, gas, and oil. The government’s announcement in August 2023 that they are seeking to increase low carbon hydrogen production capacity from almost 0 to 10GW by 2030 indicates the imminent start of a major transition.

This paper aims at providing an overview of current research and policies around hydrogen and at summarising the debate of West London working groups and round tables on the topic. This paper is not intended to shorten a complex debate and does not provide a definitive answer to the question of what role hydrogen will play in the future. It rather seeks to establish a baseline understanding and help scope and inform some of the critical choices before decision makers in West London.

If you have any queries or comments arising from the paper, please email jette.steder@westlondon.com.
